New Zealand - Hawke's Bay, McLaren ValeBilancia takes its name from the Italian word meaning balance and harmony. Partners Warren Gibson and Lorraine Leheny are both winemakers and have built up an impressive collection of awards including New Zealand's first ever Trophy for Pinot Gris.
The wine produced by Bilancia comes from Bilancia's own steeply terraced, north facing vineyard overlooking Hawke's Bay's Gimblett Gravels and is planted principally in Syrah and Viognier.
The first release of their premium La Collina Syrah 2002 (Italian for Hillside) scored 95/100 from Bob Campbell M.W. for Gourmet Traveller Wine and the 2004 was awarded 96/100 by the same wine critic. Both wines were co-fermented with a small amount of Viognier. La Collina 2005 has been described as 'the greatest Syrah to ever come out of New Zealand and it single-handedly positions this country, for the first time, among the great Shiraz producers of the world." by Matthew Jukes & Tyson Stelzer for Taste Food & Wine 2008. Bob Campbell also rates Bilancia as one of the "Rising Stars" of the New Zealand wine industry.
Bilancia Syrah 2006 was rated as one of the best 365 wines of 2008 by Matthew Jukes & Tyson Stelzer in Taste Food & Wirie 2008 and Jamie Goode acclaimed the 2007 vintage as "the wine of the tasting" at the New Zealand Annual Tasting held at Lords in January of 2009.
In 2005 Warren Gibson was voted New Zealand Winemaker of the Year by Australasian magazine Winestate.
