France - ChampagneChampagne Taittinger are one of the few Grande Marque Houses that are still family owned and run. Presiding over this fabulous estate is Pierre-Emanuel Taittinger who is assisted by his children Clovis and Vitalie. With over 650 hectares of their own vineyards, Taittinger control much of their own production, with much of the vineyard being of Grand Cru classification.
In the 1960s a prescient decision was made by Pierre-Emanuel’s great-uncle Francois to focus the House’s resources around Chardonnay and to pursue a vision of lightness and delicacy which has become a hallmark of the Taittinger style enjoyed today. The Taittinger cuvees also benefit from a longer aging process than is required under Champagne regulations delivering wines that have a subtle elegance with an underlying persistence of flavour and length that see the wines consistently score well in international tastings as well as sommeliers from around the world.
Alongside Non-Vintage, Vintage and Rose wines Taittinger has two unique wines as part of its portfolio. Les Folies de la Marquetterie is a single vineyard wine made up of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir taking its name from the stunning Chateaux located on the family property. Prelude Grands Cru is made up of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir all from Grand Cru vineyards. Some connoisseurs rate this as one of Champagne’s great value treasures.
While extending the underground structure of the Saint-Nicaise Abbey, the Taittinger family discovered empty bottles of the more full-bellied style used by the Benedictine monks two centuries earlier. This bottle was to serve as a model for Taittinger’s prestigious Comtes de Champagne.
The vintage dated Comtes de Champagne wine is made up of 100% Chardonnay grapes all from the Cote des Blancs vineyards. 5% of the wine is aged in oak barrels for four months (a third of which are renewed every year). Only after nearly 10 years in the cellars under Saint-Nicaise does this exceptional cuvee see the light. It is a study in power and elegance.
The very early James Bond movies saw the Comte de Champagne Blanc de Blancs share the screen with Sean Connery as his Champagne of choice.
