It is now well established that Central Otago produces wines of outstanding varietal definition and Quartz Reef is no exception. Specialising in premium Methode Traditionnelle, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, Quartz Reef showcases the proven winemaking talents of Austrian-born Rudi Bauer.
Rudi’s talent has been recognised by his recent success at the 2010 Royal Easter Show Wine Awards where he was awarded Winemaker of the Year. This follows his highly coveted nomination for the International Winemaker of the Year Award at the prestigious Der Feinschmecker Wine Awards, dubbed the Oscars of the wine world.
Rudi searches to make wines which exhibit ‘a symphony of flavours’ that ‘capture attention and entertain so that you forget everything else’. Quartz Reef Methode Traditionnelle is fresh, crisp and lively, the Pinot Gris is a dry style complimenting food of all flavours and the Pinot Noir is firm and intense with notes of ripe black cherry, pomegranate and spice.
Quartz Reef vineyards are in the stunning sub-region of Bendigo with New Zealand’s largest quartz deposit lying beneath the vineyards. They achieved Demeter Certification for biodynamic farming in November 2011. The focus on understanding and managing the vineyard as a whole and living ecosystem gives rise to wines with a distinctive sense of terroir.
