Australia - New South Wales, Canberra

There is family owned and then there is 6th generation family owned.

The latter is true of McWilliam’s Wines, a family grape growing and winemaking business which started with Samuel McWilliam planting grapes in New South Wales’ Cowora district in 1877.

In 1913, Samuel’s son JJ McWilliam, carted 50,000 vine cuttings to the Riverina, effectively starting winegrowing in that now famous region.  In 1917, JJ opened the Hanwood Winery, which nearly 100 years later, is still the hub of McWilliam’s winemaking operations today.  McWilliam’s started exporting wines in 1935, and in 1960 the family released their first varietal table wines to meet Australia‘s emerging interest in these new styles.

Today, McWilliam’s is known for producing wines of quality and value across a dizzying array of styles, sub-regions and price points and is now one of Australia’s most awarded wineries.  With its roots firmly planted in the soils of New South Wales, McWilliam’s is able to draw on its accumulated knowledge as custodians of the land while continuing to look forward at new emerging terroirs and viticultural techniques.

And still family owned.
